Greetings folks.
As I write this me and my SO have just returned from a visit to the local long barrows. One of them was near a picnic site, and very much laid back, relaxed, pacified, although there was still a strong energy present.
The other one, the Uley barrow, was a different story. As we drove up past the sign that indicated the barrow, down a dirt road, I suddenly got my 'alarm bells' going off, making sure for me that we were approaching the barrow. However, we didn't find the barrow at that time. Driving back and along the road, we saw it in the field. We parked the car and walked through the field towards the barrow.
All the while I was walking there, I was challenging whatever presence was there, as I felt the need to do so. Mind you, not challenging as in 'Come out and fight, you pansy' but along the lines of 'This is who I am, this is what I have done, I'm The Man' sort of challenge. Very nordic style. :)
The barrow itself is open and can be entered and I did, after trying to feel my way around it. Inside was enough space to nearly stand to my full length, and several smaller tunnels I didn't explore further due to lack of light.
The feeling I got inside the barrow was.....spooky. Like there was something nasty in there, not wanting me to be there. But when touching some of the stones, I felt an overwhelming feeling of sleep.
The impression I'm left with is an undead spirit residing in the mound, together with the spirit of the mound itself. My SO and the dogs we had with us definitely did not like the place: the dogs crept up close to her as she was waiting outside on the slope of the mound. Her nine-year old daughter however didn't notice a thing.
I'm wondering about this now. Anybody else ever encountered something similar? I'm not inexperienced when it comes to dealing with spirits, but this one has me rattled. I would like to investigate further, possibly to see if I can do something about this 'something nasty' that seems to be there. If anyone has any ideas, feelings, insights, feel free to share.
FYI, I've provided a link to a site with information about the specific tump.
So much depends on the spirit, what type of spirit, its attachment to the place and what its intent is.
Any local stories about this place? Old legends etc?
Since you are getting "Alarm Bells" going off, I would say listen to yourself and go cautiously on this.
