I heard this morning that the state I live in is going to destroy 12 million ash trees in an effort to contain the Emeral Ash Borer.
This astonishing number of trees stole my breath, then my mind was staggered that they were doing this in order to save the other estimated 700 million ash trees in the state.
This critter is from Asia and was first seen in Chicago a couple of years ago.

Much like the zebra mussle, the sea lamprey, and many other non-indigenous species that are running rampant, this bug came here in a shipping crate.
I know that a local university is trying to find a way to contain this bug, but there hasn't been any luck so far.
The ironic part of this story is that the ash trees were planted to replace the elm trees that were lost to Dutch Elm disease.
I think I'll go hug a tree...
