The Paranormal Trend

Submitted by Earthrise on Sun, 07/23/2006 - 11:22am.

The paranormal trend is catching on, everything from ghosts to psychics. What has driven this trend? Is it the popularity of TV shows like Ghost Hunters? or maybe it's the Travel Channel's "Haunted Places"? The popularity has even transcended the television and now jumped to web sites. How many people here watch these types of shows? and what do you think of them.

Liberty's Evil Twin

Submitted by Grandmother Spider on Mon, 07/03/2006 - 2:49pm.

Liberty Desecrated, and how:

A church in Memphis Tennessee - with the attractive name of World Overcomers Outreach Ministries Church - has turned the Lady into a Jesus freak.

Into a travesty.

She holds, not a torch to light the darkness, but a cross. Her crown is emblazoned with the name Jehovah. She carries the Ten Commandments, and beneath her there they are again.

And she's crying.

Well she might be, poor Liberty, dragooned into the service of a religiosity that no longer knows what it means, that confuses patriotism with religion, and seeks to show that America belongs to Jesus. This evil twin of Liberty doesn't want to welcome, but to dominate. And although Jesus echoed some of her concerns, it's clear that many of his followers don't.

American Taliban much?

The War on the War on Christmas

Submitted by Grandmother Spider on Wed, 12/14/2005 - 8:02pm.

Is there any member of a minority religion who believes there's a war on Christmas? Anyone? Bueller? No. Of course not. From where we sit, this is still very much a Christian country, and so what. All paths blah blah blah. Just leave me alone to follow my ways and we're fine.

So what's this REALLY about? Whipping up the culture wars. Listen to former Fox New producer Charlie Reina:

It’s no surprise, of course, that this phony call to arms, this “Christmas (ergo, Christians) Under Attack” hysteria, emanates from the bowels of Fox News Channel. The network is, after all, ground zero in the culture wars that polarize so much of America these days. Make no mistake about it: Fox is on a mission. Its slogans say, “Fair and Balanced” and “We Report, You Decide.” But in the six years that I worked there, what I heard most from Fox management were mission statements – about turning things around, taking news back from the liberals, and giving “middle America” a voice long denied it by the “east coast media elite.” In other words, using its news report to bring about change -- in the media and, ultimately, in the direction of American culture.

...

[W]hat really separates Fox from the competition is its unabashed use of religion as a divisive weapon. Common sense -- and common courtesy -- have long dictated that personal religious beliefs be kept out of news reporting unless the story at hand involves religion. But on Fox, it’s not uncommon for an anchor to raise the issue of a guest’s religion, or lack thereof, a’ propos of nothing.

...

[I]t’s no wonder this “War on Christmas” (now in its second successful year) is a production of Fox News Channel -- the very network that has made accusation, recrimination and confrontation the gold standards of cable “news,” and whose personalities have fashioned a self-serving “war” out of whole cloth, thanks to a scattered handful of p/c dupes and a shameless management willing to use even Christmas for its own political ends.

If you're Pagan and watch Fox News for any other reason than keeping an eye on the folks who'd love to drive us back into the broom closet, I wonder what's up with you. Seriously. What's up with you? I'd like to know. I mean, we've been experiencing the War on Yule for, what, 2,000 years now?

You have to ask "cui bono," and who benefits clearly are the Republicans who use culture wars--even their own sacred days--to whip up hatred and try to divide Americans against each other. Don't fall for it. Like I think readers here are falling for "the war on Christmas." But this kind of thing is going to whip up fears and hatred of us, we all know; don't fall for fearing and hating back.

(And yeah, I'm returning to blogging here.)

Out of practice Wiccan looking for help.

Submitted by Army Kid on Fri, 08/05/2005 - 12:20pm.

Howdy folks! I have been Wiccan for the last 8 years and regretfully confess I haven't practiced the belief for approx. 3 of them. Now I come to the table in need of assistence and (gulp) help. My fiance' has a brother who for as long as he can remember has been "haunted" by visions and dreams influenced by a being that (from my understanding) calls itself "Archaos" (Ark-a-o-is).

Almost 42 and already a Crone

Submitted by eternal on Wed, 11/17/2004 - 4:16am.

I had a hysterectomy December 1, 2000. I begged for it, bullied to get it. I had bled non-stop for several years and was tired of the pain, never planned on having rugrats and just wanted it to end.

A New Beginning

Submitted by Dawn on Sat, 07/17/2004 - 8:21pm.

Hi, I'm Dawn, and I have just started practicing Wicca. My mom is not taking my new religion very well (she's living in the olden days) she's convinced that I'm worshiping Satan, I've tried constantly to explain to her that I don't even believe in Satan, but she never listens...What's the easiest way to explain Wiccan to her?
